Cushion of the week: The Ara Collective’s Indigo Xela

This week’s cushion of the week is the Indigo Xela by wonderful brand, the Ara Collective. The cushion itself needs little justification – it’s simply a stunner – but you may not have come across the Ara Collective before. Founded by Sarah Contrucci Smith, the company partners with artisans around the world to create limited edition pieces of home decor joy. I love its vibe and ethos, and know that you will too.

The Pixan Co-operative (pronounced pea-shawn) makes this beautiful Indigo Xela cushion. The co-operative is an association of eleven women’s weaving co-operatives spread across the Western highlands of Guatemala.  They strive to empower the most isolated and marginalised women to achieve a life with dignity, and seek sustainable development for the betterment of their communities.  That means in buying their gorgeous products you are helping to directly support the women that make them. Indeed, 10 per cent of the profits made by the co-operative are re-invested into a program chosen by members.

The striking ikat design on this cushion makes a bold and dynamic statement. Almost tribal in nature, it packs a mean interiors punch. However, even though this will cushion add a touch of the exotic to any interior scheme, it is in fact naturally dyed using locally sourced materials, before being woven on foot looms in the highlands of Guatemala.

Are you as in love with indigo as I am? Such a fabulous colour that works particularly well in a tonal scheme, like in the photo above. It has real versatility though and can work equally well with other contrasting colours. Superb!

What do you think of the Indigo Xela cushion and the Ara Collective? I hope this has been a helpful introduction to a great brand that you may not have come across before! There are a load more stunning cushions, throws and other accessories on offer in their online shop – go check them out!

Happy travels, and shopping
